Who do you look to for guidance?
All beliefs concerning the way to eternal life may be summarized into two categories: man and what he says versus God and what He says in His word (the Bible). Each of us must choose who we are going to trust to guide us. Who we turn to for spiritual direction becomes the authority for all aspects of our life. Ultimately, we alone are responsible before God to learn what the Bible says about spiritual matters, right and wrong, and life after death.
- Do you want to know what the Bible says about eternal life?
- Are you willing to accept the authority of God’s Word or your training or traditions?
- Do you believe the Bible is God’s truth and should be used to guide you spiritually?
“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Proverbs 14:12
What Man Says
How many ways are there to Heaven? Some men believe that they can get to Heaven by their own merit and efforts by trusting in the following:
- Good Works – Many people think a person can earn the right to go to Heaven by doing more good deeds than bad. However the Bible says that it is “Not by works of righteousness which we have done but according to His mercy He saved us . . .” Titus 3:5
- A Mixture of Good Works and Faith – Others believe that faith is necessary for eternal life, but not enough by itself. They attempt to earn eternal life by doing good deeds and believing Jesus Christ or some other religious leader. This belief consists of a mixture of faith and good living but the Bible says “For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
What God Says
God says there is only one way to Heaven and that is through Faith in Jesus Christ Alone
Faith in Jesus Christ alone is the only requirement for eternal life. “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:26
Salvation is a gift from God which cannot be earned by living a good life or performing religious deeds. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
Good works are the result of salvation, not the cause. “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ…” Galatians 2:16
What do you believe?
When a person recognizes that what they previously believed does not match the Bible, they should reject error. Salvation is not man trying to reach God by his good deeds, but God reaching down to save man from his sin. “Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without deeds of the law.” Romans 3:28
What you believe is important. Although sincerity is necessary, it is possible to sincerely believe in something that is not true. We must believe the truths in God’s Word. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:9
What does a person need to understand in order to have eternal life?
God’s Way
God clearly tells us that the only way to eternal life is through His Son, Jesus Christ. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by Me.” John 14:6
If you were to die today, are you 100% sure that you would go to Heaven? If not, the following truths will help you understand God’s way of Salvation.
WE HAVE ALL SINNED
“For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23 The word sin means to come short of perfection, by disobeying God. At one time or another, we have all chosen to disobey God.
SIN HAS A PENALTY
For the wages (payment) of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23 The payment for your sin is death and separation from God in a place the Bible calls Hell. This is the fate of every person who has not believed in Jesus Christ as their Savior.
JESUS PAID THE PENALTY
“But God commendeth (proved) His love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 God demonstrated His love for you by giving His only Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for your sin. Jesus died in your place and paid the penalty for your sin.
BELIEVE ON JESUS TODAY
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Romans 10:9 To believe on Jesus Christ as Savior means to have faith that he died for you, paid the price for your sin, and is the only way to Heaven. You can express your belief on Jesus through prayer.
PRAY SINCERELY…
“Dear Jesus, I know I am a sinner and that I deserve Hell. I believe You died on the cross, paid the penalty for my sin, and rose from the dead three days later. I am placing my faith in You alone to forgive my sin and save me. Thank you for giving me eternal life. In Jesus’ name, AMEN.”
You can know for sure!
The assurance that you have eternal life is based on God’s unchanging Word. The Bible provides this assurance to those who believe on Him. “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” John 3:36
God does not lie. He has promised everlasting life to those who believe on Him as Savior. “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.” Titus 1:2 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13
